Lying

January 25, 2008

lie
By definition: it is a type of deception in the form of untruthful statement with the intention to deceive, of with the further intention to maintain a secret or reputation, or to avoid punishment. (wikipedia.org)

Tonight, I’m superbly mad. I can’t sleep. It drives me uncomfortable and retreat to think of the awkwardness (that the person had done because what? I believe the person lied.)

It is such a disappointment. I’m somehow feeling hateful towards the person whom I will condemn that he/she lied.

So, I felt I’m going to do a self-help at google.com. The following is what I found to ease myself and eventually put myself asleep.

Psychology on lying (in which I deliberately summarize from wikipedia again) -
Lying is universal in the human development. Social psychology and development psychology are ‘used’ to make the lie believable.

Assuming at the age 4 and 1/2 children are able to lie convincingly when they learn untruch can avoid punishments for misdeeds. Because their experiences are still prematures, they will sometimes tell extravagant lies not minding whether the statement is believable or not. They will learn throughout the years by watcing people lie and the result of their lies to develop a proper understanding. Habits will (hopefully) change into early adulthood.

Moving on, there are different type of lies:

bald-faced lie, lying by omission, lie-to-children,white lie, emergency lie, perjury, bluffing, misleading, dissembling, careful speaking, exaggeration, jocoselies.

then I skip alot of shebangss,

find this argument, pretty fonding.
’When one lies, one undermines trust in society’ [some philospher came with that, wikipedia.org]
From experiences, it makes sense. I lied because I don’t trust.

Tired of doing the research and recording the findings cause I thought who actually is going to read it.

I’ll finish off with the ’how to detect’ tips.

How to detect lies (blifaloo.com)
++ Beware of the truth ++

Body language
- physical expression will be limited and stiff. Movements of hands, arms, and legs are toward their own body.

- avoiding eye contact

- hands touching face, throat, and mouth or touching/scartching the nose/behind ear. NOT LIKELY to touch his/her chest/heart with an open hand.

Emotional gestures and Contradiction
- timing and duration of emotional gestures are off normal pace. [delayed emotions, stays longer, or suddenly stop]

- off timing or unmatch between emotions gestures/expressions and words. eg, I love it *while opening the gift* — *open the gift* *smile* thne ‘i love it!

- expression are limited to mouth movements instead of the whole face. eg, real smiles will involve jaw/cheek movement, eyes and forhead push down.

Interactions and Reactions
- when guilty, person gets offensive. When innocent, person gets often get offensive.

- a liar usually gets uncomfortable facing the questioner/accuser (may turn his head or body away)

- a liar might unconsciously place objects between themselves and you.

Verbal Context and Content
- Liar will make use words of the question as the answer. eg, ‘Did you eat the last cookie?” – ‘No I did not eat the last cookie’

- a statement with a contradiction is more likely to be truthful.

- lying by making indirect statements, implying instead of denying

- guilty person speak more. add unnecessary details as they are not comfortable with silene/pauses during conversation.

- liar may leave out pronouns and speak in a monotonous tone. when truthful statement is made, the prounoun is emphasized more than the rest of the words in a statement.

- words may be garbled/spoken softly, syntax and grammar may be off.

Other signs of a lie:
- sudden subject change will make innocent confused but liar more relaxed and follow willingly.

- humor and sarcasm is used to avoid subject.

I’ve got all the tips. Tomorrow, I’ll be sure to keep update to what’s going during the lie hunting and perhaps exercise the no-no of lying. lawl

G’night and G’morning everyone.
